Case 1: Waste strategy. A retail company with a goal of Zero Waste is using a management company to handle the waste and recycling services for its 90+ stores. Ironically, the management company was creating waste by applying broad-brush criteria for choosing vendors, mainly based on low cost. Pañña conducted thorough research on the waste vendors, both directly and by speaking with the retail stores, ultimately identifying numerous opportunities to improve diversion rate and save money. Now the client is renegotiating its contract with the management company from a strong position of knowing its own values, intentions, and options. Zero Waste is now feasible, not just an idea on a sustainability roadmap.

Case 2: Streamlined document process. A client with an ambitious paper reduction goal regularly updates an information document for its customers. Over time, the process to create this document evolved organically until more than 20 people had to touch it. Pañña helped assemble the entire document creation team in one room – for many, the first time they had met some of the other people involved in the process! Over a half-day facilitated session, the team mapped its own process, then dramatically streamlined it. The new version is expected to save 37,000 pounds of paper per year (more than 300 trees) along with the associated staff time. With proper guidance, the team could finally cut through the bureaucracy and achieve genuine paper reduction.
