This case study describes Recreational Equipment Inc’s (REI) journey toward rigorous business metrics that allow the co-op to manage GHGs as part of their standard operations and strategy. It highlights the evolution of REI’s environmental Key Performance Indicators from backward-looking metrics to forward-looking business tools and explains how the new tools and methodology work to create better accountability for GHG emissions. The level of detail is intended to be sufficient for other companies (in any industry) to begin taking concrete steps toward creating their own forward-looking business tools for GHG management.

Green Team 2.0: Beyond the Volunteer Effort

For many companies, the sustainability program begins with a corporate “Green Team.” This group – often a multifunctional mix, and often a volunteer effort – brainstorms ideas for green initiatives, then carries them out in various ways, ranging from hidden skunkworks projects to those with full executive blessing and funding.
